I’m honestly deeply disappointed by this proposal. Extending the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years isn’t just a policy change — it affects real people, real families, and our sense of belonging.

Many of us came to the Netherlands with hopes of building a stable future here. We work hard, contribute to the economy, learn the language, and become part of the community. Citizenship is not just a passport — it’s the feeling of finally being “home.” Doubling the wait time takes that hope and pushes it far away.

For families like mine, this makes it even harder. Bringing our loved ones here is already a long and emotional journey. Now, imagining that our spouses and children would have to wait 10 long years before they can truly belong — it feels unfair and discouraging.

This country thrives because of the people who choose to make it their home. Policies like this risk turning committed residents into outsiders for far too long. I sincerely hope the government reconsiders this step — for the sake of inclusion, integration, and basic humanity.
