I am writing to express my deep disappointment regarding the proposed increase of the period required to apply for Dutch citizenship from 5 years to 10 years. I have been living in The Netherlands for 3 years now and understood the situation and currently learning Dutch at A2 level and also planning to learn next levels to better integrate and connect with Dutch people, and I, like many residents, have been contributing to Dutch society and paying taxes.
Extending the naturalisation period to 10 years feels unnecessarily restrictive and may undermine the recognition of long-term residents’ commitment and integration. It also raises questions about the distinction between naturalisation and permanent residence, as those who qualify for permanent residency already demonstrate a strong and lasting connection to the Netherlands.
I strongly urge the government to reconsider this proposal and maintain the current 5-year period, which balances both integration and fairness for those who have chosen to make the Netherlands their home.
