I am an international professional currently living and working in the Netherlands. Like many other expats, I chose this country because of its welcoming attitude toward highly skilled migrants and its commitment to diversity, innovation, and global collaboration.
The proposed extension of the residency requirement for citizenship from five to ten years is deeply concerning. Such a change would create uncertainty for many skilled migrants who have already structured their lives, finances, and long-term plans around the current system. It could also make the Netherlands less attractive to international talent, at a time when innovation and expertise are crucial for the country’s future competitiveness.
A balanced and predictable immigration policy is essential for maintaining the Netherlands’ reputation as an open and forward-thinking nation. I respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal and to maintain the current five-year pathway to citizenship, which supports integration, stability, and mutual commitment between skilled migrants and Dutch society.
