Dear Sirs,

I would like to express my opposition to the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 years to 10 years.

We are a family of a Highly Skilled Migrant ( my wife) and an entrepreneur (myself), and we deliberately chose the Netherlands among other options as the place to settle and build our future. One of the key factors in this decision was the current 5-year residency requirement for citizenship, which encourages integration and provides a clear, realistic pathway to becoming full members of Dutch society.

We actively contribute to Dutch society and the economy. As Highly Skilled Migrant and self-employed entrepreneur:

- We pay high taxes from the beginning of their stay.
- We did not benefit from Dutch public education or health services during our upbringing so there was basically no cost to develop us.
- We fill critical skill gaps in the labor market.
- We create jobs and generate revenue through entrepreneurial activities, further supporting economic growth.

It is important to recognize that these groups differs significantly from asylum seekers for instance, both in circumstances and in integration dynamics. A “one-size-fits-all” extension does not reflect these differences.

My family has now lived in the Netherlands for 4 years, and we are in the process of completing our inburgering exams. We have already invested significant time, resources, and effort into building our lives here. Extending the naturalization period to 10 years at this stage would be unfair and would undermine the motivation that initially attracted us to the Netherlands.

If the government nonetheless decides to proceed with this proposal, we strongly urge the introduction of transitional arrangements. Those who are already close to fulfilling the 5-year requirement, and/or those who were promised of the integration within 5 years should not be retroactively disadvantaged.

In conclusion, the 5-year naturalization period is an effective and fair policy that supports integration and helps the Netherlands remain an attractive destination for global talent, including both employees and entrepreneurs. Extending this to 10 years risks discouraging skilled migrants, entrepreneurs, and undermining integration efforts.

I appreciate your kind consideration.

Best,
