Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my deep concern about the proposed law that would increase the required residence period for naturalisation from five to ten years. As an Iranian living in the Netherlands for the past four years, I feel personally and profoundly affected by this proposal.
During these years, I have worked very hard to integrate fully into Dutch society. I am learning the Dutch language and can now communicate well in everyday situations — I even follow Dutch news and participate actively in my local community. The Netherlands has become my home, not just the place where I live. I have embraced Dutch values, such as freedom, equality, and respect for the rule of law.
For many of us who come from countries like Iran, obtaining Dutch nationality is not only a practical step — it is also a matter of safety and belonging. We cannot return to our countries of origin, and being unable to obtain a secure nationality for ten years means living in prolonged uncertainty and emotional stress.
Extending the waiting period to ten years would have serious consequences:
It would discourage motivated and well-integrated residents from investing in their future here.
It would slow down the integration process, as people feel less connected when they are kept in a temporary status for such a long time.
It would negatively affect mental health and stability, especially for people from unsafe countries.
It might ultimately harm the Netherlands itself, which benefits from having committed, well-integrated, and loyal new citizens who contribute socially and economically.
The current five-year period is already long enough to demonstrate integration, commitment, and connection to Dutch society. Doubling that time would not strengthen integration — it would delay it.
I kindly urge the government and lawmakers to reconsider this proposal and maintain the five-year requirement. This approach supports both the values of fairness and the practical goal of fostering a cohesive, confident, and united Dutch society.
Thank you for considering my perspective and for giving residents like me the opportunity to share our voice.
With kind regards,
Negin Afkhamifar
