To whom it may concern,

I strongly oppose the decision to extend the naturalization period from five to ten years. This change is a politically motivated move that unfairly targets non-Dutch migrants, using them as scapegoats for issues stemming from years of weak government policies. The timing—so close to elections—suggests this is merely an attempt to appease certain voter bases rather than address real challenges.

The core issue is not the duration of integration but the lack of resources to support it. Language courses are prohibitively expensive, often inaccessible, and rarely comprehensive. Extending the naturalization period won’t accelerate integration; it will only delay it. Migrants who have already invested time and effort into learning Dutch, participating in society, and contributing to their communities will now face unnecessary barriers. Naturalization is more than a bureaucratic label—it unlocks opportunities for deeper integration, which are now being arbitrarily withheld.

As a migrant, I pay taxes and work directly with Dutch public institutions. I’ve achieved B1 proficiency in Dutch and communicate at an even higher level. I engage in local sports, help my Dutch neighbors, and participate in community events at our Dorpshuis. I feel Dutch, and my peers see me as Dutch. Yet, this administrative hurdle prevents me from fully embracing that identity. My story is not unique; countless migrants in the Netherlands are striving to integrate, only to be met with frustration and confusion due to this policy change.
This extension doesn’t foster integration—it breeds resentment. It sends a message that the government doesn’t truly want us here, despite our contributions. If the government’s actions suggest we’re unwelcome, why would we want to stay?

This policy is shortsighted and harmful. I urge you to reconsider.
