A recent proposal to extend the Dutch naturalization period from five to ten years aims to boost integration, but it may backfire—especially for highly skilled migrants who are already active members of society.
These individuals contribute to the economy, speak the language, and have adapted to Dutch life. For those who have already been here for several years, extending the wait for citizenship feels discouraging and unjust. It ignores the time and effort they’ve already invested in becoming part of the community.
While higher standards might make sense for newcomers, applying them retroactively to well-integrated migrants sends the wrong message. Recognizing their commitment isn’t just fair—it benefits the Netherlands in the long run.
