I would like to express my concern regarding the proposal to extend the naturalization period for highly skilled immigrants from 5 to 10 years. Such a change could have unintended negative consequences for both current and prospective expats who are actively contributing to the Dutch economy and society.

Highly skilled immigrants play a vital role in essential sectors and, as taxpayers and active contributors, we help strengthen the economy, foster innovation, and support the competitiveness of the Netherlands on a global scale. Extending the waiting time for naturalization risks making the Netherlands a less attractive destination for talent, especially when compared to neighboring countries.

For instance, Germany has recently reduced its naturalization period to as little as three years in certain cases and allows dual nationality. By contrast, extending the Dutch waiting period and maintaining restrictions on dual nationality could place the Netherlands at a disadvantage in attracting and retaining international talent. Over time, this could discourage highly skilled workers from choosing the Netherlands as a long-term home, potentially impacting the country’s economy and international competitiveness.

I urge policymakers to carefully consider these broader implications and to ensure that the Netherlands remains a welcoming and competitive environment for highly skilled immigrants who already contribute so much to the country’s prosperity.
