I would like to express my concern regarding the proposed extension of the citizenship integration period to 10 years.
As a highly skilled migrant, I contribute significantly to the Dutch economy and society. I pay taxes at a higher rate than many, I am learning the Dutch language, and I am deeply committed to building my life here. My daughter was born in the Netherlands; she is fully integrated, and our family feels at home in this country. We have bought a house, made Dutch friends, and embrace Dutch culture and values.
Extending the waiting period for citizenship will not necessarily improve integration. True integration comes from engagement with society — learning the language, understanding local values, and participating in the community — not simply from the number of years one resides in the country. In fact, policies that make the path to citizenship longer or less attainable can discourage the very people who are eager to invest in and contribute to Dutch society.
The challenges of integration do not stem from how long people must wait for a passport but from the “cultural fossilization” that occurs when people live in isolation from the local culture. Addressing integration effectively requires policies that encourage participation, language learning, and mutual understanding — not those that create barriers.
The Netherlands has long been admired for its inclusiveness and pragmatic approach. I hope the government will continue that tradition by focusing on measures that foster genuine integration, rather than extending the timeline for citizenship.
Thank you for your attention and consideration.
