To whom it may concern,
I am writing as a young, highly educated engineer working in the Netherlands on a highly skilled migrant permit. I wish to express my strong disappointment with the proposed extension of the naturalisation period.
As someone who pays taxes, supports the local economy, and invests time and effort into integrating already for four years, I believe I contribute positively to Dutch society. In a country facing an aging population and competing globally for talent, skilled young professionals are valuable assets. Extending the naturalisation period would make people like me feel less welcome and considerably reduce the attractiveness of staying and building a life here.
The proposed change would not only affect individuals’ sense of belonging, it would also have practical consequences for talent retention. If the Netherlands becomes a less welcoming place for skilled migrants, some of us will reconsider our options and may choose to relocate to countries that offer clearer, faster paths to permanent integration and citizenship. That would be a loss for Dutch innovation, companies, and tax revenues.
I respectfully urge the government to take into account the perspectives of the many highly skilled migrants who already contribute economically and socially. Please retain a pathway to naturalisation that recognises the investment migrants make in the Netherlands and that supports the country’s competitiveness.
Thank you for considering my views during this consultation.
Sincerely,
Ruslan Mamedov – A concerned highly skilled migrant who works hard and honestly in this country.
