I do not support the proposal to extend the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years. Instead of a blanket extension, I believe the government should consider an individual’s background and contribution to Dutch society.
If a person is law-abiding, resides legally under a valid residence permit (such as HSM or similar), and contributes positively to the country by paying proper taxes and integrating well into society, then they should remain eligible for naturalization after 5 years.
Extending the period to 10 years for everyone, regardless of their contribution or status, may discourage skilled professionals and long-term residents who already play an active role in the Dutch economy and community.
A fair and balanced approach would be to assess individuals based on merit, compliance, and contribution rather than increasing the waiting period universally.
