The proposed change to extend the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years risks creating more harm than benefit.

From the Dutch economy’s perspective, such a rule makes the Netherlands less competitive in attracting and retaining global talent. Skilled professionals in IT, healthcare, and engineering often choose countries that offer stability sooner. A 10-year wait discourages them from settling, buying homes, starting businesses, or committing long-term. With an ageing population and significant labour shortages, the Netherlands cannot afford to reduce its appeal to the very people who can drive growth and innovation. Furthermore, delaying citizenship weakens integration incentives, as expats may feel excluded and disengaged from society for too long.

From the expat’s perspective, the change means a decade of living in uncertainty without full rights despite contributing to taxes, social security, and the economy. Citizenship provides security, career opportunities in roles restricted to EU nationals, and one of the world’s strongest passports for mobility. A longer path denies expats political representation, stability for their families, and equal participation in Dutch society.

In short, the rule risks weakening the Dutch economy and undermining expats’ integration, stability, and contributions.
