Ladies and Gentlemen,
With this response, I would like to express my concern about the proposal to extend the period for naturalization from 5 to 10 years. In my opinion, a term of 5 years is sufficient to demonstrate a strong connection with the Netherlands. During that period, a migrant has ample opportunity to learn the language, work, pay taxes and participate in society. In my opinion, extending the deadline to 10 years does not guarantee a stronger bond, but it does make the trajectory unnecessarily heavier and more discouraging for people who have already integrated. It is not just about the number of years, but about the quality of integration. Factors such as work experience in a Dutch environment, taxes paid, rent and other contributions, participation in social activities and demonstrable language skills say much more about the degree of bond than a doubling of the length of stay. That is why I advocate maintaining the current term of 5 years, but looking at more qualitative criteria to measure integration where necessary. In this way, a distinction can be made between people who are demonstrably settled in 5 years and people who are less established, without everyone having to wait automatically 10 years. Best regards,
