To the esteemed decision-makers, we respectfully submit our strong opposition to the proposed extension of the naturalization period from five to ten years. This significant change profoundly affects the personal and family lives of long-term legal residents, imposing a sudden and disruptive uncertainty comparable to an unforeseen crisis.
As a highly skilled migrant who has resided legally in the EU for ten years, including over four years here in the Netherlands, I have already established a significant and legitimate value through my contribution. We are law-abiding residents, diligently paying taxes and contributing positively to the economy. Our commitment extends to learning the Dutch language and actively integrating, despite the demanding balancing act between career, family, and keeping pace with rapid technological advancements inherent to being a highly skilled migrant. The constant pressure of short job-seeking periods three months coupled with existing market and political uncertainties already makes establishing a secure life challenging.
The Netherlands is recognized globally as a welcoming nation that values human rights and dignity. We urge you to uphold this reputation and reconsider any law that would unilaterally postpone the life goals and aspirations of residents who have committed years to this country.
A constructive alternative would be to count previous legal residency in other EU countries toward the required period, recognizing our deeper connection to the European Union and aligning with the spirit of EU integration. Please consider the human impact of this decision, ensuring that policies do not unjustly undermine the stability and dreams of your contributing residents.
