I am writing to express my concerns regarding the government’s proposal to increase the naturalization eligibility period to 10 years.

I have two children who attend Dutch public schools and are fluent in Dutch. They follow the Dutch curriculum, and as a result, their Dutch language skills—including their accent—are well developed. If I were forced to leave the Netherlands due to losing my job and not finding new employment within three months, it would be extremely difficult for me to take them back to my home country and teach them English or our mother tongue effectively.

My children have grown up here; all their friends are Dutch, and they are deeply rooted in this culture. I worry that if they were to return to our home country, their Dutch-style pronunciation and different cultural background might lead to bullying or social exclusion.

The prospect of having to uproot my family due to employment instability, compounded by a longer wait for naturalization, creates significant stress and uncertainty for us. I kindly urge the government to consider these real-life implications when planning changes to the naturalization process.

Thank you for your understanding and attention to this matter.
