Dear Sir/Madam,

I am the spouse of an HSM expat, and our family has been living in the Netherlands for the past 3 years. We moved here seeking stability and a future for our children and are fully committed to contributing to Dutch society.

The proposed extension of the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years affects not just individuals but entire families. For children and spouses, this can create uncertainty about rights, education, and social integration.

I respectfully urge reconsideration of this proposal for the following reasons:
1. Children’s well-being and education: Uncertainty around citizenship may impact access to certain programs and a sense of security.
2. Family integration: Delays in naturalisation may limit our ability to fully participate in community life.
Emotional impact: Longer waiting periods can cause stress and anxiety for family members, especially teenagers, affecting their emotional health.
3. Fair transition: Families who have invested time and resources in integration deserve clarity and protection from retroactive changes.
4. International competitiveness
From a competitive standpoint, a 10-year naturalization period is longer than many peer countries, potentially diminishing the Netherlands’ attractiveness to international talent, thereby impacting innovation and economic growth.

The Netherlands is where we want to build our lives, and we are deeply connected to it. I respectfully ask you to consider the long-term consequences of this change for families like mine and to recognize that maintaining the five-year naturalization period better serves both integration and society as a whole.
Or at least consider an exception for those who came to the Netherlands under current legislation.

Thank you for considering this feedback during the consultation phase.
Sincerely,
P. Singhal
