As someone who has been living and working in the Netherlands for the past 3.5 years, I am deeply concerned by the proposal to extend the naturalization period from five to ten years. I came here legally as a highly skilled migrant, contribute to the economy and community, and have been building my life with the expectation that the current five-year rule would apply.
The five-year period already provides ample time to demonstrate integration and commitment. Extending it to ten years would risk discouraging skilled professionals from choosing the Netherlands as their long-term home, and weaken the sense of belonging that is essential for integration.
It is also important that changes are not applied retroactively. Many of us have made personal and professional commitments based on the five-year rule, and altering this midway would undermine trust in the system.
For these reasons, I respectfully ask that the government preserve the current five-year naturalization period for highly skilled migrants and safeguard those already on this path.
