The proposal to extend the citizenship plan from five to ten years is unjust, particularly for highly skilled migrants who contribute significantly to the Dutch economy.

First, highly skilled migrants often fill critical roles in technology, engineering, and healthcare—sectors where the Netherlands faces talent shortages. Extending the citizenship timeline could deter these professionals from settling long-term, impacting the country’s global competitiveness.

Second, families, like mine with children, face uncertainty and stress under prolonged waiting periods. My children are in schools, have made friends, and have integrated into Dutch society. A prolonged wait can disrupt their development and sense of belonging, which runs counter to inclusive societal integration goals.

Third, many migrants have shown strong community involvement—volunteering, fostering local initiatives, and contributing to social cohesion. Lengthening the path to citizenship undermines these efforts and the spirit of integration.

The five-year plan reflects a fair and encouraging approach to integrating skilled migrants and their families, ensuring the nation’s continued growth and vitality.
