I understand that the government’s intention in extending the naturalisation period to 10 years may be to promote stronger integration and ensure that new citizens have deeper, long-term connections with the Netherlands. The goal of fostering commitment to Dutch society is understandable and important.

However, I am concerned about the potential impact of this proposal on people who are already living in the Netherlands and actively contributing to their communities. Many residents have established their lives here — through work, study, family, and social engagement — and already feel deeply connected to the country. Extending the naturalisation period could make it harder for them to feel recognised as a full part of the society they belong to.

It is also concerning that the proposed change would apply to individuals who are already in the Netherlands, without a transition period. This creates uncertainty and disappointment for many who have planned their future based on the current five-year requirement.

I hope that, in further consideration of this bill, attention will be given to the human and social implications it may have for long-term residents who already see the Netherlands as their home.
