I am concerned that extending the naturalization period could discourage highly skilled expatriates who are already making valuable contributions to the Dutch economy, particularly in vital sectors. As taxpayers and active participants in society, we help drive economic growth, and reducing the Netherlands’ attractiveness to both current and future skilled migrants may have lasting negative consequences. For instance, Germany has shortened its naturalization period to as little as three years in certain cases and permits dual citizenship. By lengthening the waiting period and requiring the renunciation of one’s original nationality, the Netherlands risks becoming less competitive than neighboring countries, potentially harming its long-term economic prospects.
