1. The dutch economy relies on growth heavily on expats
2. Expats do come to the Netherlands for a few reasons like: friendly culture, no language barrier, tax benefits, and the chance to integrate and become dutch yourself in 5 years
3. The Netherlands competes for these talents coming in from abroad with it's neighbors like Germany, Belgium and Scandinavian countries
4. Currently with talks about ending the tax benefits and increasing the required time from 5~10 years are making the Netherlands less attractive than their counterparts
5. With the influx meant for the Netherlands going in other directions either the economy would struggle or businesses will have to offer more lucrative offers
6. Lucrative offers to expats can push salary brackets higher and consequently make the Netherlands less attractive for businesses and hiring talent
7. The economical impact of expats coming in is amplified by actually living here, settling down, going out, going to gyms, enjoying festivals, having a beer, whatever they do, their income is pumped back into the economy
8. Companies like ASML, FinTech startups, or brainport startups will suffer trying to hire talents in a country that is moving in the other direction
9. Growth in technology and AI sectors may plummet
10. Expats are not taking over jobs meant for dutch people, expats are helping the Netherlands grow despite their labor shortages
11. The labor shortages will extend from construction and blue collar to the rest of the corporate world
12. For the sake of the economy this should not happen, even Germany is not moving in that direction and the dutch are known to be friendlier and more embracing
13. If this goes through, the of people who had germany for example as an option and have been here for less than 5 years will definitely pack up and leave, this sudden wave of emigration will have a significant impact
14. If this is about integration, I highly doubt that having to integrate in 10 years would push people to integrate faster, on the contrary, if anything, it will make people lose interest, now that it's 5 years, people feel better having kids or moving with kids in the Netherlands, having a family forces people to integrate whether it's to understand their dutch speaking children or to have better connections with their neighbors, or even focusing on getting a job in the government.
One more unrelated thing, tax the rich.
