As an international PhD researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology, I would like to express my strong concern regarding the proposal to increase the required residency period for naturalization from 5 to 10 years.
One of the key reasons I chose the Netherlands for my doctoral studies was the relatively transparent and efficient path to citizenship compared to other European countries. This policy signaled that the Netherlands values international talent and provides a fair and achievable path to long-term integration.
Extending the period to 10 years will significantly reduce the attractiveness of the Netherlands as a destination for highly skilled migrants, researchers, and international students. For many of us, a stable future and a sense of belonging are crucial in deciding where to study, work, and build our lives. The uncertainty and delay caused by this change will discourage talented individuals from choosing the Netherlands and may even push current residents to consider opportunities in countries with more balanced naturalization requirements.
I therefore urge the government to reconsider this proposal. Maintaining the current 5-year period supports the Netherlands’ reputation as an open, knowledge-driven society that welcomes international talent and strengthens its position in the global competition for skilled migrants.
