I understand the government's intention to strengthen the integration process, but extending the Dutch citizenship eligibility period from 5 to 10 years is deeply unfair to many expats and long-term residents. These individuals have already invested significant time, effort, and financial resources based on the previous 5-year commitment. Changing the rules mid-way undermines trust and creates uncertainty for those who have built their lives here.

Moreover, this proposal sends a discouraging signal to highly skilled migrants who actively contribute to Dutch society—through work, taxes, and community engagement. Rather than fostering inclusion, it risks portraying expats as less welcome, which could have long-term consequences for the Netherlands’ global competitiveness and ability to attract talent.

Recent data shows that over 60% of Dutch citizenships granted in the past three years were to asylum seekers. While humanitarian protection is vital, the proposed legislation should differentiate between categories of migrants. Highly skilled professionals who legally relocate to the Netherlands and contribute to its economy deserve a fair and predictable path to citizenship.

A more balanced approach would recognize the diverse contributions of all residents and ensure that Dutch nationality remains accessible to those who are genuinely committed to the country.
