As a highly skilled migrant who has chosen to build a life in the Netherlands, I strongly object to the proposed extension of the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years. This change undermines the principles of fairness, inclusion, and recognition of contribution.
I pay taxes like any Dutch citizen, contribute to the economy through my professional expertise, and actively participate in Dutch society. Extending the path to citizenship sends a discouraging message to those of us who bring high value to the country—not just economically, but socially and culturally.
Citizenship is not merely a legal status; it is a symbol of belonging and commitment. The current 5-year requirement already allows ample time for integration, and doubling it risks creating unnecessary barriers for those who are already deeply invested in the Netherlands. It delays access to democratic participation, long-term security, and full civic engagement.
This proposal may also deter future talent from choosing the Netherlands as a destination, weakening the country’s position in the global competition for skilled professionals. I urge the government to reconsider this measure and maintain a naturalization policy that reflects the values of openness, merit, and mutual respect.
