The plan to double the residency requirement from 5 to 10 years feels deeply unfair and damaging. For people who have already chosen the Netherlands as their home, it sends the message that no matter how much you work, study, pay taxes, or build a life here, you will still be treated as an outsider for an entire decade. It traps people in limbo, unable to fully plan their futures, buy a home, or commit to long-term career opportunities.

Many of us come here with ambition, skills, and the genuine desire to belong. We invest ourselves in learning the language, embracing the culture, and giving back to society. But this proposal risks leaving us feeling like second-class citizens, unable to move forward no matter how hard we try. Instead of fostering loyalty and integration, it creates discouragement, uncertainty, and isolation.

A fairer path would be to ask for real proof of integration—strong language skills, knowledge of Dutch society, financial independence, and good conduct—rather than simply forcing people to wait double the time. True belonging is not measured in years on paper, but in the efforts people make to contribute and build a shared future. Proposals like this make it harder not only to attract talent, but for people already here to feel welcome.
